Day by day, ride by ride
Follow the line north and back — every day its own landscape, from Ba Be Lake to Limestone karst.
Roll out of Hanoi and trade city traffic for open country roads — an easy warm-up to settle into the bike before the mountains begin. Overnight in Ba Be.
The adventure begins in Hanoi. We slip out of the city early to miss the morning rush, then let the highway hand over to quieter country roads. This first day eases you in while still serving up scenery — the Red River Delta, Thac Ba country, Ba Be National Park and Ba Be Lake. It is a deliberately gentle start: time to get a feel for your bike, meet the group and learn how we ride together before the mountains arrive. Come evening you settle in around Ba Be, the Tay minority and a stilt-house homestay at Pac Ngoi.
Today runs Ba Be to Cao Bang, with Cao Bac Pass the highlight of the ride — ~5 hrs in the saddle over mountain passes and winding roads.
From Ba Be the road climbs and winds toward Cao Bang, running across mountain passes and winding roads. The day is built around its landmarks — Cao Bac Pass, remote highland valleys and limestone karst — with regular stops to rest, take photos and soak it in. Along the way you pass through highland market towns of Bac Kan and Cao Bang, a reminder that this corner of Vietnam is as much about its people as its passes. Plan on about 5 hrs of riding at an unhurried pace, arriving in good time to settle into your overnight at Cao Bang.
Today runs Cao Bang to Lang Son, with Ban Gioc Waterfall the highlight of the ride — ~7 hrs in the saddle over a waterfall detour then the historic frontier road.
From Cao Bang the road climbs and winds toward Lang Son, running across a waterfall detour then the historic frontier road. The day is built around its landmarks — Ban Gioc Waterfall, the Vietnam-China border, Highway 4 and limestone peaks — with regular stops to rest, take photos and soak it in. Along the way you pass through the Nung and Tay of the border country, a reminder that this corner of Vietnam is as much about its people as its passes. Plan on about 7 hrs of riding at an unhurried pace, arriving in good time to settle into your overnight at Lang Son.
Today runs Lang Son to Halong Bay, with the Mau Son foothills the highlight of the ride — ~6 hrs in the saddle over frontier hills easing down to the coastal plain.
From Lang Son the road climbs and winds toward Halong Bay, running across frontier hills easing down to the coastal plain. The day is built around its landmarks — the Mau Son foothills, Lang Son, the descent to the coast and Bai Chay — with regular stops to rest, take photos and soak it in. Along the way you pass through the trading towns of the northeast frontier, a reminder that this corner of Vietnam is as much about its people as its passes. Plan on about 6 hrs of riding at an unhurried pace, arriving in good time to settle into your overnight at Halong Bay.
A day off the saddle around Halong Bay — halong bay's limestone islands before the ride continues.
There is no long transfer today — the bikes get a rest and so do you. Instead the day is given over to Halong Bay and its surroundings, taking in Halong Bay’s limestone islands, floating fishing villages, hidden grottoes and quiet swimming coves. It is a chance to slow the pace among the boat and fishing communities of the bay. Expect time on foot and, where the route allows, out on the water, before the riding picks up again tomorrow.
The final leg drops out of the highlands back toward Hanoi — one last morning of mountain roads before the city. Passing the karst coastline on the way. Tour ends in Hanoi.
The final leg turns for home, trading the high country for rolling farmland and then the flat delta as we make our way back to Hanoi. There is still plenty to enjoy before the end — the karst coastline and the coastal highway. After roughly 4 hrs in the saddle over an easy coastal road back to the city, we roll back into the city where the journey began. Bikes are handed in during the afternoon, and most riders stay on a night to raise a glass to the miles.
