TÀ NĂNG – PHAN DŨNG
Riding Beyond the Trail
Riding a motorcycle through the entire Tà Năng – Phan Dũng trekking route is an extremely demanding off-road challenge.
This is not a route for ordinary motorcycles or inexperienced riders. The terrain requires a proper dirt bike, strong off-road skills and a rider who is comfortable handling difficult and unpredictable terrain.
THE ROUTE
The Tà Năng – Phan Dũng route is one of Vietnam’s most famous long-distance trekking trails, stretching for approximately 30 kilometres across the mountains between Lâm Đồng and Bình Thuận.

The terrain changes constantly.
Red-dirt trails lead across exposed hills and steep slopes. Rocky streams cut across the route, while sections of loose gravel, deep mud and narrow forest tracks make progress increasingly demanding.
During the dry season, the trail can become extremely dusty and covered with loose stones.
During the rainy season, the same trail can turn into deep mud, making traction and bike control a serious challenge.
Some sections are little more than narrow mountain tracks, with complicated junctions and no obvious signs indicating the correct direction.
A ROUTE FOR DIRT BIKES
A proper dirt bike is essential for attempting the full route.
High ground clearance, knobby off-road tyres, reliable brakes and a well-maintained chain and drivetrain are critical.
A scooter or standard road motorcycle is simply not designed for this kind of terrain. Attempting the entire route on an unsuitable motorcycle greatly increases the risk of mechanical failure and accidents.
But having the right motorcycle is only part of the equation.
You also need the right skills.
Riders should be confident handling steep climbs and descents, loose gravel, mud, sand, rocky stream crossings and constantly changing surfaces.
The ability to control the motorcycle at low speed, choose the right line and recover from unexpected situations is far more important than simply having a powerful engine.

NEVER RIDE ALONE
Tà Năng – Phan Dũng is not a route where you should simply point your GPS at the destination and ride off alone.
Go with a group.
Ideally, ride with an experienced local guide or someone who knows the terrain well.
The route contains numerous junctions and remote sections where getting lost or suffering a mechanical problem can quickly become a serious situation.
A group also means that riders can support one another when a bike needs to be lifted, repaired or recovered.

WHAT TO CARRY
For a serious off-road expedition, proper protective equipment is essential:
- Full-face or off-road helmet
- Riding gloves
- Knee and elbow protection
- Riding boots
- Protective riding gear
- Spare inner tubes
- Basic motorcycle repair tools
- Chain and tyre repair equipment
- Sufficient drinking water
- Basic first-aid supplies
The route is remote, so preparation matters.

BEYOND THE TREKKING TRAIL
For trekkers, Tà Năng – Phan Dũng is already an extraordinary journey through some of southern Vietnam’s most dramatic mountain landscapes.
For an experienced dirt-bike rider, attempting to cross the same terrain on two wheels creates an entirely different experience.
There is no comfortable road.
No easy shortcut.
Just dirt, rocks, steep hills, forest, streams and whatever the mountain decides to put in front of you.
And that is precisely the attraction.
Tà Năng – Phan Dũng is not simply a road to ride.
It is a trail to overcome.
